Have you noticed all of these songs, both Christian and secular, that have the theme of ‘fight’?
Fight Song- Rachel Platten
Surrounded (Fight my Battles)- UPPERROOM
I am Not Alone- Kari Jobe
Every Giant Will Fall- Rend Collective
And sooo many more.
We seem to be a nation fighting and yearning for strength in a battle that is often unseen.
I know so many people that are working through and fighting through some heavy battles right now, including myself, and it can wear you out in a hurry.
I heard the song “Fighting for Me” by Riley Clemmons on my way to work one morning and lost it. I sat in my car for several minutes before collecting myself enough to walk inside.
Even writing these words, my eyes sting with tears.
The words of the chorus speak so deeply to my situation and trial I am facing:
You are the peace when my mind’s at war. You will never stop fighting for me.
When I cannot fight for myself. Every word is a promise You keep.
‘Cause You’ll love me like nobody else.
You will stand up for me.
In the darkest night.
When my faith is weak.
You’re still by my side.
You will never stop fighting for me.
When I was doing my devotions that night, the verses flooded my mind that reminded me of three important things when I’m faced with a battle: Who, How, and What.
WHO: Exodus 14:14 The LORD will fight for you, you need only to be still. Psalm 84:11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield… 1 John 4:4 greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.
HOW: Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober-minded, be watchful… 2 Corinthians 10:4 with weapons, not of flesh, but of divine power.
WHAT: Ephesians 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places. I could go on.
I’m really thankful that I memorized so many verses each year at camps and VBS type church functions right about now.
The Holy Spirit uses those verse that I have hid in my heart to comfort and guide me. I cannot recommend scripture memory enough; but thats not what this post is about!
This post is about battles. Spiritual warfare that is so very real. The evidence is all around us.
We live in a world where evil is running rampant.
Broadcasted on the nightly news.
We actually have to make hashtags that say people’s lives matter and that we need to save our children from pedophiles.
Just the sheer fact that those things have to be said is blaring evidence that evil is widespread and truly the pandemic of the human heart.
As a Christian it can be so discouraging. Not only is the world crazy, but we have to take hits from the devil in our personal lives too? You’re probably thinking, I can’t take it! It’s just too much!
You’re right. It is too much for you… on your own.
God never intended for you to handle it in your own strength. He never intended for us to carry such burdens by ourselves.
He is our Defender.
HE is fighting for you.
HIS strength is made perfect in our weakness. (See? More scripture flying at you.)
He not only wants us to share the burden with Him, but CAST it on Him; literally translated: THROW or give up to.
Give up on trying to make it all right on your own accord, it often doesn’t happen on our timeline or even look how we thought it would.
Give up trying to carry the weight of something that happened in your past.
Whether it was 15 years ago or yesterday, GIVE. IT. UP.
Throw that weight on Jesus and watch your shoulders straighten.
Watch those crumpled wings smooth out and soar.
Tell that storm how big your God is.
The battle is the Lord’s.
